Breaking Good: My Albuquerque
The highly-anticipated season 3 of Better Call Saul starts tonight on AMC. Most of it is set in one of my favorite cities in the US, Albuquerque. While it may be an acquired taste for some people, I thought I would take a few minutes to tell you about the New Mexico that I remember as a child. Although the “ABQ” portrayed by Walter White and his gang of methamphetamine dealers does make for good drama, there is another Albuquerque which I remember.
My mother’s family is from northwest New Mexico, near the Colorado border. We would drive through Albuquerque every summer on the way to the Four Corners area to spend a few weeks. Over the years, I came to appreciate the rugged beauty of the New Mexico. My memories are of the incredible Southwest cuisine, the picturesque mesas and arroyos, and fragrant juniper trees baking in the summer heat. We would always stop and spend time in Albuquerque on the way. I think back fondly on the old, rustic buildings, and markets filled with Native American pottery and gaudy silver and turquoise jewelry.
A Few Don’t-Miss Sights in Albuquerque
Some of my favorite things about Albuquerque are the Sandia Peak Tramway, the Old Town Plaza, and the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History.
It’s been several years since I’ve been back. I can’t wait to get back to the New Mexico that I have come to know and love.
Albuquerque on Points and Miles
Points and miles junkies in some programs will find it easy to earn or redeem while visiting Albuquerque.
On the hotel front, Best Western, Choice, Hilton, Hyatt, IHG, LaQuinta, Marriott, and Starwood are all represented. Some have multiple brands in the market.
Several major airlines have nonstop flights to Albuquerque – Alaska, Allegiant, American, Delta, JetBlue, Southwest, and United.
Southwest has always had a significant presence in the market but Alaska has recently ramped up their focus on Albuquerque. Nonstop service to Orange County and Portland Oregon begins August 18. Nonstop service to San Francisco follows on September 18 and nonstop service to San Diego begins on October 18.
Catching Up on Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad
If you haven’t yet caught up on Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad, it isn’t too late. While Breaking Bad has ended, Better Call Saul is a stand-alone show that can be watched independently. You can start fresh without any previous Breaking Bad experience and catch up to these great characters.
I love ABQ. I love NM. Such an amazing place. Always can’t wait to go back.
Had no idea about your ABQ connection…worked major federal projects there (including new CTHS in ABQ), Sanra Fe, and a couple in Farmington. Lots to see and great eats.
