The Bachelor in Bali – From Home and Back

I shared earlier this year that watching The Bachelor is my guilty pleasure when I’m stuck in hotel rooms. I still think that it’s an unrealistic show that mirrors the troubles of vacation romances (with the added intensity of a compressed timeframe, extra alcohol, and lots of bystander crew members. But this season has been particularly interesting (SO SO SO much crying) and then tonight when I saw it would be The Bachelor in Bali (in Indonesia, one of my favorite places), I couldn’t turn away.

Five spoiler-free takeaways from tonight’s episode:

1. Bali = romance, if for no other reason than the abundance of villa-style hotel rooms with welcoming beds, deep tubs, and breathtaking views.

2. I was impressed that the producers were mindful of temple etiquette. They filmed in a couple of temples and each time Chris Harrison gave a quick briefing on proper respect. I always believe it’s important to follow proper protocol when visiting someone else’s place of worship so I was pleased to see they were respectful, including following proper temple wear requirements.

3. I knew this already, but they edit dialogue out of sequence. I know this because I’m familiar enough with the scenery on major roadways across the island to know that what I saw out the back window in the scenes with tonight’s rejected woman (as she was being “driven to the airport”) was NOT shot in sequential order. The other clue was the state of her hair in the snippets, but the scenery was a dead giveaway that the clips were reordered to fit the production.

4. If you were to believe tonight’s episode, monkeys run around all over the island, not just in the Monkey Forest and other specific habitats. I dislike monkeys (and the Monkey Forest) so I hate Bali getting that reputation. I was impressed to see that they stayed away from other tourist traps though and tried to maintain a more tranquil view of the island. So score one for the Indonesian tourism folks!

5. The resort featured was The Mulia in Nusa Dua. I’ve never stayed there but it’s near The Bale and the St. Regis, just a bit south of the Grand Hyatt that I often stay at.

As for tonight’s episode, well… I wasn’t too surprised at the outcome of the Rose Ceremony. Were you?
