A new report on millennial travel preferences from PhoCusWright suggests that the 30 and under crowd is traveling differently than their older counterparts, according to an article in The Washington Post this week.
Research on millennial travel trends has been on the upswing as travel providers work to adjust product offerings to meet preferences of these travelers. Millennials “harbor a special passion for travel, make spontaneous travel decisions, crave inspiration and personalization, seek unique experiences, do more traveling and travel planning with friends, and happily take trips solo,” said Eugene Ko of PhoCusWright.
That leads to tweaks in offerings from familiar brands such as Hilton with room service adjustments as reported earlier this week on Travel Update by Barb Delollis or redesigned communal friendly lobbies at brands like Marriott’s Springhill Suites.
Reported preferences for stays in private homes and other non-hotel settings suggest projected increases for new-style travel services such as Airbnb, which may translate to an uptick in it’s use for business (as projected by Hungry for Points)
Last year’s Expedia report on the Future of Travel (and infographic below) highlighted other key trends including research that revealed that the 18-30 crowd is traveling more than the rest of us, spends more on room service and hotel dining, and are more likely to extend their work trip into pleasure.
All that suggests that changes to familiar travel brands to accommodate the whims of the millennial generation won’t be ending any time soon. One encouraging sign? They at least seem to be just as interested in their loyalty programs, points, and miles as the rest of us!
