A couple of weeks ago, I shared that I had been given a free Hilton HHonors status upgrade through 2016 thanks to a special cross-promotion with American Airlines AAdvantage program.

My Executive Platinum status was matched to Hilton HHonors Diamond, the top status level in their program, normally awarded to loyal guests who stay at least 60 nights and/or have at least 30 unique stays each year.

But there were three important things I needed to do to make sure that offer was fully optimized:

1.  Click the link in the email to accept the status upgrade.

My first email seemingly went to my spam folder in late September.  I discovered the offer via a reminder email two weeks ago.

2. Stay three times in the specified period (before December 31) to receive 25,000 AAdvantage bonus miles.

That was a no brainer for me.  It turns out I already had one stay under my belt when I found the email.  I changed my reservation for that very night to capture stay number two.  And this week, I accomplished stay three.  That means the equivalent of a free round-trip domestic ticket is now mine!

3. Optimize the MyWay settings for the new status tier.  This is the one I almost missed.  Luckily I’ve been at Hampton Inns for the two stays since my Diamond status kicked back in but the desk agent at my last one reminded me that I needed to make my selections on hiltonhhonors.com so that I’d be assured of receiving my preferred choice (which in many cases is either bonus points or a food/beverage selection).

As you can see, my personal preferences vary depending on the brand – I usually will choose the snack/beverage over a small amount of points up to a certain threshold.  But when the points value goes up, my snacking goes down!

Now that I’ve done these three things, I can rest easier knowing my stays through March of 2016 will be more comfortable thanks to my free Hilton HHonors status bump!
